A new CT artefact - the bubble curve sign.

چکیده
Since the introduction of the original singlesection computed tomography (CT) machines, and more recent spiral CT, several different types of CT artefact have been described. Recognized artefacts include motion artefact, metallic streak artefact, beam hardening, partial volume artefact and step artefact. The use of contrast-enhanced spiral CT has created many new artefacts and potential pitfalls. Imaging too early, or in a patient with poor cardiac output leads to heterogeneous appearances of the spleen and liver. Mixing of unopacified venous blood from the legs with opacified renal venous blood in the inferior vena cava (IVC) gives the false impression of thrombus. Artefacts are also prevalent in multi-detector CT coronary angiography and motion artefact can cause the appearance of an anomalous right coronary artery. Much research has been carried out to both understand and reduce these artifacts. In the present study, the authors describe a new artefact, which may be due to beam hardening acting on a moving bubble of gas in spiral CT machines. Beam-hardening artefact (cupping artefact) comes from the absorption of lower energy photons and the resultant variable linear attenuation coefficients of tissue. Its appearance is improved by beam-hardening reconstruction algorithms. On review of the literature, the authors did not find an artefact similar to that described in the present report.

Can CT imaging features of ground‐glass opacity predict invasiveness? A meta‐analysis
BACKGROUND A meta-analysis was conducted to investigate the diagnostic performance of computed tomography (CT) imaging features of ground-glass opacity (GGO) to predict invasiveness. METHODS Two reviewers independently searched PubMed, Medline, Web of Science, Cochrane Embase and CNKI for relevant studies. CT imaging signs of bubble lucency, speculation, lobulated margin, and pleural indentat...
متن کاملApplication of New Inflection Point Method for Hydrodynamics Study in Slurry Bubble Column Reactors
Bubble column reactors are used in a wide variety of applications such as multiphase bioreactors, catalytic slurry reactors, and absorption processes. The superficial gas velocity-gas holdup relationship and transition point are two important parameters for characterizing the hydrodynamics of a bubble column reactor. In this study, systematic investigation of a nitrogen - water - glass bead...
متن کاملA new ultrasound sign in the diagnosis of pediatric maxillary sinusitis
Background: Computed tomography scans (CT scan) and X-rays are used to diagnose paediatric maxillary sinusitis. This study aimed at exploring the diagnostic value of the conventional and colour Doppler ultrasounds and their specific findings in cases of paediatric sinusitis. Methods: A total of 60 children diagnosed with sinusitis were included in this s...
متن کاملA New Approach for Determination of Neck-Pore Size Distribution of Porous Membranes via Bubble Point Data
Reliable estimation of the porous membranes neck-pore size distribution (NPSD) is the key element in the design and operation of all membrane separation processes. In this paper, a new approach is presented for reliable of NPSD of porous membranes using wet flow-state bubble point test data. For this purpose, a robust method based on the linear regularization theory is developed to extract NPSD...
متن کاملCT Reconstruction Using FBP with Sinusoidal Amendment for Metal Artefact Reduction
In this paper, a new method for metal artefact reduction in computed tomography is investigated, based on sinusoidal amendment. Each voxel in the scanned object corresponds to a sinusoidal curve in the projection data set. Some of the sinusoidal curves result from metal implant, which can be identified because the attenuation coefficient of the metal is much higher than that of human tissue, an...
